CORK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTS: FEAR SCREEN: EUROPEAN THRILLERS AND HORRORS

8pm every Thursday, 7th-28th March at Triskel Arts Centre

12th February 2024, Cork City: Cork International Film Festival (CIFF) returns this March with its popular season of cinematic thrills, terror and suspense at the Triskel, Cork.

Fear Screen: European Thrillers and Horrors at CIFF presents a selection of gripping tales and chilling masterpieces, curated by CIFF and screening every Thursday at 8pm for the month of March at the Triskel. From Gothic thrillers to the best of the ‘found footage’ genre to darkly comic folklore, each feature will be introduced by CIFF Programme Manager, Si Edwards.

Cork audiences can catch Georges Franju’s 1960 French fairytale horror Eyes Without a Face, Czech Gothic thriller Morgiana (Juraj Herz, 1972), the terrifying [REC] from Spanish duo Jaume BalaguerĂł and Paco Plaza (2007), and the darkly comic yet shocking Troll Hunter from Norway (AndrĂ© Øvredal, 2010). The season of cinematic bone chillers will be complemented by an online programme of European horror shorts, available on CIFF’s Digital Festival Platform nationwide later next month. Details of this special digital programme will be announced across CIFF platforms (corkfilmfest.org, Facebook, Instagram, and X) very soon.

CIFF Director & CEO Fiona Clark said: “As Ireland’s leading film festival screening the best of European cinema, we are thrilled to bring this curated selection of European horror films to Cork next month. Our inaugural ‘Fear Screen’ season proved enormously popular last spring and we can’t wait for audiences to discover these horror classics on the big screen in the Gothic, atmospheric surrounds of the Triskel.”

The 69th edition of Cork International Film Festival will take place Thursday 7th to Sunday 17th November 2024.

FEAR SCREEN 2024 SCHEDULE
Fear Screen film stills are available here.

Thursday 7th March, 8pm: EYES WITHOUT A FACE (1960)
Georges Franju – France

Georges Franju’s masterpiece of fairytale horror, where the “princess locked in the tower” is assumed by the facially disfigured, waxen masked daughter of a doctor obsessed with restoring her beauty via experimental skin grafts. Beautiful, chilling and ultimately horrific.

Thursday 14th March, 8pm: MORGIANA (1972)

Juraj Herz – Czechoslovakia

Coming in at the tail end of the Czech new wave, Juraj Herz dropped this eyeball-warping Gothic thriller about twin siblings KlĂĄra and Viktoria (both played with much relish by Iva JanĆŸurovĂĄ). When the scheming Viktoria decides to kill good-natured KlĂĄra, her own luxuriant life becomes consumed by plotting, suspicion and paranoia. A visual explosion of extravagant eyeliner and fish-eye lens “cat vision”, which Prague’s Kino Světozor described as “like a dress-up, younger-generation version of Baby Jane, set in an ornamental snow globe”.

Thursday, 21st March, 8pm: [REC] (2007)

Jaume BalaguerĂł, Paco Plaza – Spain

One of the best entries into the found footage genre, and certainly one of the most terrifying, is Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s [REC], which sees a TV reporter and her cameraman following a crew of firemen on their nightly rounds, only to stumble into a bizarre outbreak in an apartment block that turns the residents into ravenous cannibals. A real edge of the seat, hands over the eyes treat.

Thursday 28th March, 8pm: TROLL HUNTER (2010)

AndrĂ© Øvredal  – Norway

A small crew of student filmmakers investigating bizarre deaths in the Norwegian outdoors discover a man secretly employed by the government to eradicate the cause of these incidents – trolls. Playing with all the fairytales and folklore with a darkly comic tone, and still having the power to shock, Troll Hunter has its tongue firmly in its trollstench-caked cheek.
