Exceptional Films from Around the Globe at CIFF2023

This year, for the first time, Cork International Film Festival will offer audiences a unique opportunity to discover Directors’ Fortnight (La Quinzaine), a parallel, free-spirited film selection from Cannes Film Festival, as well as a programme of extraordinary International Fiction selected from film festivals across the world. Entertaining, surprising, and sometimes shocking, come and experience the new and unexpected at our 68th Festival.

DIRECTORS’ FORTNIGHT

A unique opportunity to discover the selection of Cannes Film Festival’s parallel section, Directors’ Fortnight. Created in 1969 by the French Directors’ Guild (SRF, Société des réalisatrices et réalisateurs de films), the Directors’ Fortnight showcases a wide spectrum of films and highlights the most singular and visionary practices in contemporary cinema.

The Goldman Case (La Procés Goldman) by Cédric Kahn:
Based on a real case from the 1970s, this courtroom drama tells a story that divided France (5.30pm, Fri 17th Nov, Everyman) ⁠ ⁠
This screening will be introduced by Julien Rejl, Artistic Director of Directors’ Fortnight, with a welcome provided by Xavier d’Argoeuves, Cultural Counsellor at the French Embassy in Ireland. Presented in partnership with the French Embassy in Ireland and Alliance Française de Cork. 

Deserts (Déserts) by Faouzi Bensaïdi:
Two bank representatives travel the deserts of Morocco to recover loan payments from poor villagers in the form of goats and carpets in this road-movie comedy. To be introduced by Julien Rejl, Artistic Director of Directors’ Fortnight. (12.30pm, Sat 18th Nov, Triskel) ⁠ ⁠

A Prince (Un Prince) by Pierre Creton:
A young man comes to a gardening school to learn horticulture and fulfil erotic fantasies of his older teacher in this tale of love and lust. To be introduced by Julien Rejl, Artistic Director of Directors’ Fortnight. (6.30pm, Sat 18th Nov, Triskel)  ⁠

Riddle of Fire by Weston Razooli:
Three kids embark on a quest to unlock the parental controls on their games console in this adventurous tale for grown-ups. (5.30pm, Sun 19th Nov, Triskel)

She is Conann by Bertrand Mandico:
The bloody gender-flipped tale of Conann, a cruel and barbaric force to be feared in this love letter to the macabre. To be introduced by Julien Rejl, Artistic Director of Directors’ Fortnight. Youth Jury Award nominee. (8.30pm, Fri 17th Nov, Triskel) ⁠

INTERNATIONAL FICTION 

Our International Fiction programme is a wide-ranging collection of new works from renowned film festivals around the globe, carefully selected by our programming team to premiere at CIFF. Here are just some of this year’s highlights:

Eileen by William Oldroyd:
A pitch-perfect American psychological thriller, with Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway, follows an unlikely and dangerous friendship between a young prison facility worker and her new glamorous colleague. (8pm, Tue 14th Nov, The Everyman) ⁠ ⁠

The Sweet East by Sean Price Williams:
An unhinged whirlwind of a road movie and a 21st century fairytale, boasting a superb cast (Talia Ryder, Jacob Elordi, Ayo Edebiri) and the directorial debut from cinematographer Sean Price Williams. Youth Jury Award nominee. (8.30pm, Thu 23rd Nov, Triskel)

The Bikeriders by Jeff Nichols:
Follows the rise of a mid-1960s Midwestern motorcycle club ‘The Vipers’ through the lives of its members. Starring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer and Norman Reedus. (8.30pm, Thu 16th Nov, The Everyman) ⁠ ⁠

Kidnapped (Rapito) by Marco Bellocchio:
This Italian historical melodrama by Marco Bellocchio is based on the true story of a Jewish boy who was taken from his family by the Church, christened and raised as a Catholic. (5.30pm, Sun 12th Nov, The Everyman) 

A Sensitive Person (Citlivý Člověk) by Tomáš Klein:
The dark, grotesque vision of Central Europe provides the background of this darkly humorous story about a complicated relationship between father and son. Director Tomáš Klein will be present at the screening and participate in a Q&A afterwards. (5.30pm, Fri 10th Nov, Triskel) ⁠
