CIFF2021 ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: IN THE MIRROR OF MAYA DEREN

We are proud to present this online exclusive about pioneering experimental filmmaker Maya Deren. With her first film collaboration, Meshes of the Afternoon (1943), Maya Deren changed the face of experimental cinema. In Martina Kudláček’s exceptionally constructed documentary we follow Deren’s life from her birth in Kiev through a career which enveloped film, poetry, dance and ethnography. Kudláček paints a portrait of Maya Deren as an artist rich in life and celebrates a career that spread its influence throughout the art world.

CIFF2021 ONLINE EXCLUSIVE: aemi: ARTIST IN FOCUS: LYNNE SACHS

Making work since the 1980s Lynne Sachs’ films have incorporated a cross-pollination of forms that extend to the essay film, documentary, collage, performance, and poetry. aemi is delighted to present this overview of selected short works by Lynne Sachs at Cork International Film Festival, many of which are screening in Ireland for the first time.

Srdjan Dragojević’s dark comedy deals with subjects like faith and religion in three segments. In first segment, ‘Sin’, set in 1993, Stojan, a convinced communist, wakes up with a halo after an accident with a bulb. Grace is set in 2001 and focused on Gojko, who believes that a saint can talk to him via mobile phones. And in The Golden Calf, set in 2026, gallery owner Julia discovers that Gojko can paint a painting that sates hunger.

Brother’s Keeper + Director Q&A
Yusuf and his friend Memo are pupils at a school for Kurdish boys in the remote Anatolian mountains. One morning Memo falls ill and, despite the extreme conditions, Yusuf struggles against the school’s authoritarian regime to help his friend. Ferit Karahan’s gripping drama highlights Yusuf’s determination in the face of adversity and effortlessly keeps the tension high throughout.

Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy
From director Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Happy Hour, Drive My Car) comes a beautiful triptych of tales linked by fate, memory and coincidence. An unexpected love triangle, a failed act of revenge and a meeting of old friends following a school reunion – the three stories presented here are self-contained, but flow from one to another lightly and effortlessly, much like the music that separates them.

Winner, Silver Bear Award, Berlin International Film Festival
