Seamus

Cork Film Festival in association with Cork City Council, celebrates the centenary of Seamus Murphy with a special screening of Louis Marcus’ much acclaimed documentary ‘The Silent Art’, screening on a new print from the Irish Film Archive.

Louis Marcus is one of Ireland’s most distinguished and pre-eminent documentary filmmakers, winning many major international awards including two Academy Award nominations. In 2005, Cork Film Festival honoured Louis with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

We are delighted that Louis Marcus will attend the screening to discuss his film ‘The Silent Art’.

This year, to mark the centenary of the birth of Seamus Murphy RHA (1907 - 1975), the Irish Film Archive worked with Louis Marcus to restore his film ‘The Silent Art’.  Made in 1959 on a shoestring, with borrowed money and a borrowed 16mm camera, ‘The Silent Art’ is a simple and luminous tribute to the work of this great sculptor. Against the ringing of the Shandon bells, several of Murphy’s pieces are shown in situ in UCC, in Ballyvourney and in Cork City and the sculptor himself is seen at work sculpting a bust of his daughter Orlagh.

The film has been restored at the request of the Frank O’Connor Library, the Cork City Council and Cork Film Festival and has been included in the county-wide programme of events marking the centenary of Murphy’s birth.

The restoration, from original picture and sound negatives preserved in the Irish Film Archive, was overseen by Louis Marcus.
