Short Film Awards 2009

International Jury:
Kelly Devine, USA; Barry Dignam, Ireland; Possidónio Cachapa, Portugal.

Best International Short Film

Muto Dir. Blu, Italy
“An extraordinary film for the quality of its animation, its organic embrace of the environment, and for its subtle expression of poltical solidarity.”

Special Mentions:

Walking/Marcher Dir. Jeanne Henry, France
“French actress Miou Miou is at the centre of Marcher. She takes hesitant steps towards grandmotherhood in this fluid film that treats anxiety with a playfulness that is at welcome odds with its subject.”

Little Red Hoodie, Dir.Joern Utkilen, Scotland

“We wanted to recognise Little Red Hoodie for its startling interpretation of the ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ story. The film succeeds in provoking and adds to the resonance of the age-old story.”

A Film From My Parish – 6 Farms, Dir.Tony Donoghue, Ireland

“A loving and intimate portrait of a way of life that is sadly waning. The respect for his neighbours shown by the filmmaker is clear and compelling.”

Cork Short Film Nominee for the European Film Awards

Joseph’s Snails/Les Escargots de Joeseph, Dir. Sophie Roze, France
“A charming story about a little boy discovering the importance of others. The film displays exquisite technical control, whilst maintaining a delicate and human touch throughout.”

National Jury:
Laurent Guerrier, France, Fiona Kearney, Ireland, Tom Mathews, Ireland

Best Irish Short Film

Free Chips Forever, Dir. Claire Dix.
“A fast-paced tale that is innocent without being naïve, credible yet cheeky. A simple story effectively told with great spirit.”

Special Mention

A Film From My Parish, 6 Farms, Dir. Tony Donoghue.
“An imaginative and emphatic look at a rapidly disappearing rural world.”

Claire Lynch Award for Best First-time Irish Director

Questions, Dir. Mark Noonan.
“The film struck a delicate balance between humour and emotional depth.”

‘Made In Cork’ Jury:
Eimear O’Herlihy, Lian Royayne, Gerry Murphy.

‘Made In Cork’ Award

My Beamish Boy, Dir. Mike Hannon.

Special Mention,

The Shop, Dir. Neil Hurley.

“From the fine range of films in the ‘Made In Cork’ programme, two films really stood out for their sensitive look at a vanishing Cork and for the way in which they created a real intimacy with their characters and allowed the characters to tell their own story. The award goes to Mike Hannon’s My Beamish Boy, and we give a special mention to The Shop by Neil Hurley.”

Youth Jury:
Nicole Clinton, Alan MacCarthy, Anna Horgan.

Youth Jury Award for Best International Short Film

Lesh Sabreen?/Why Shabreen? Dir. Muatad Mousa Alayan, Palestine.
“Wonderful contradictions unravel side by side throughout this film; political idealism and social realism, love in a despondent world and humour in the midst of tragedy. Both characters faced obstacles in their life that they needed to overcome in order for their love to succeed, giving us an insight into a culture that is so different from our own.”

Bombshell, Dir. Kim Farrant, Australia

Audience Award for Best International Short Film

Moore Street Massala, Dir. David O’Sullivan.
