2002 Highlights

  • Opening Gala: (Ireland) Directed by Peter Mullan "Magdalene Sisters" is a poignant account of three young women sent to the infamous laundries set up by the Catholic Church in the 19th century for fallen women and run by the nuns. The film won Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and featured Cork-born actress Eileen Walsh. The film is condemned by the Vatican Newspaper (L'Osservatore Romano) and the US Catholic League
  • Closing Gala: (Australia) Rabbit Proof Fence" directed by Philip Noyce, the film tells the true story of how under the 1931 Aborigines Act, aboriginal children were taken from their parents and placed in remote institutions for training as domestic servants
  • Kirsten Sheridan wins the UIP Director Award for her film "Disco Pigs"
  • Director Alex Cox, Oscar-winning Czech director Jan Sverak, Director Jim Sheridan, Director Peter Mullan and renowned cameraman Jack Cardiff attend the festival
  • Festival loses its title sponsor
