The Night of The Hunter
While the novel The Night Of The Hunter became a national bestseller and was voted a finalist for the 1955 National Book Award, a similar level of interest failed to materialise for the movie adaptation. Stung by the lack of critical and box office success, its director never helmed another film.
In both, a murderous preacher hunts down the children of a convict who he believes hold the secret of where their father hid the proceeds of a bank robbery. In Laughton’s hands, however, it becomes a dark and nightmarish fable, featuring Robert Mitchum in a towering performance as the homicidal preacher.
