Hong Sangsoo
South Korea | 2012 | 89mins | Colour
Isabelle Huppert plays three roles in Hong Sangsoo’s remarkable In Another Country, centering upon a young film student and her mother who run away to the seaside town of Mohang to escape their mounting debt. The young woman begins writing a script for a short film in order to calm her nerves.
Loosely improvised, In Another Country excels through its use of sheer imagination to tell a story which weaves and ripples like a jazz riff on human interconnection. Comprised of constantly diverging narratives, Hong Sangsoo’s measured direction whisks tragedy and comedy together in a mélange of controlled confusion to ultimately expound upon the capricious nature of romance and the beguiling heart at the essence of love.
