‘I am not standing on the outside looking into something. I try to work on something that is unbearably close to me and my own fears, memories or emotion, and I try never to leave that position.’ – Johanna Billing.
Swedish film artist Johanna Billing’s videos deftly weave together music, movement and rhythm with subtle emphasis on the fragility and intimacy of the individual participant’s performance within the collective, collaborative experience.
The participants in Billing’s videos all play themselves but take part in staged situations that oscillate between documentary and fiction. Her works reflect on routine, rehearsal and ritual revealing Billing’s interest in repetition and circularity.
Johanna Billing’s work is screened for the first time in Ireland as part of a collaboration between Corona Cork Film Festival and the National Sculpture Factory.
All screenings take place at the National Sculpture Factory. The films are presented as looped installations which you can join at any time between 5pm and 8pm. Admission price includes all three days of screenings and all films.
She is the founder of the Stockholm based record label Make it Happen. She has exhibited extensively across the world, including 4th Auckland Triennal (2010),Tate Modern (2008), Istanbul Biennial (2005) and most notably Documenta 12, Kassel, Germany.
