  • A Secret Understanding

55th Corona Cork Film Festival and Triskel Arts Centre present ‘A Secret Understanding’

A Secret Understanding presents a series of specially commissioned films made by visual artists in response to rare or unheard versions of songs by great bands and vocalists. These unique fusions span a wide range of visual approaches, from animation to video sampling and media art, and represent a broad review of musical styles.

The show is presented in Triskel’s Caroline Street premises (next to the newly reopened Plugd) as a looped 50-minute installation; which you can join at any time.

    A Secret Understanding features:

Graham Dolphin, with Jimi Hendrix – Star Spangled Banner Recurring
Courtesy of the Artist and SEVENTEEN
Footage of Jimi Hendrix playing his version of the American national anthem at the 1969 Woodstock festival. Simple repetition dislocates the image from its soundtrack, further distancing us from the original of the performance.

Doug Fishbone, with Also SprachZarathustra by Eumir Deodato
The awesome and otherworldly majesty of big wave surfing, blended with a funky disco/classical groove.

Nick Jordan, with Norwegian Woodby Cornershop
Presenting the time-honoured Norwegian ëhallingí dance, which is intended to demonstrate strength and virility to a female partner.

Clare Langan, with I Gaer by Sigur Rós
Supported by Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board
A highly immersive and sensory experience that reflects upon the fragility of mankind in the face of nature and its majestic powers.

Oliver Laric, with 50 50, versions of songs by 50 Cent
Amateur YouTube videos treated as foundmedia loops.

Torsten Lauschmann, with Sway byDean Martin and Julie London (Rip-Off Artist Remix)
A digital love story – where warm analogue vocals meet harsh digital glitches.

o/68 by Lia and @c, from O Superman (for Massenet) by Laurie Anderson
Lia, together with sound artists Miguel Carvalhais and Pedro Tudela, produces a unique audiovisual reinterpretation of Anderson’s 1981 hit single.

Erik van Lieshout, with Kingdom Come by Jay-Z
Part road movie, part pop video, part performance.

Jane and Louise Wilson, with Who Knows Where The Time Goes by Cat Power
Combined with Cat Powerís haunting adaptation of Sandy Denny’s song, this evokes a sense of places and people lost to the passage of time.

Am I Relapsing? by Young-hae Chang Heavy Industries, with Everyone’s Got To Learn Sometime by Beck
A tale of one person’s daily struggle with everyday life and all its injustices.

‘A Secret Understanding’ is produced by Forma.
Originally commissioned by the ICA, London as ‘Beck’s Fusions’, curated and produced by Forma in 2007.

With thanks to Forma, Triskel, Plugd and Black Mariah.
