Javier Rebollo
Spain | 2009 | 95mins | 35mm | Colour | Subtitled
Drawing on the traditions of absurdist deadpan comedy, Javier Rebollo has crafted an intimate and drily comic portrait of an anonymous housewife at the turn of the 21st century Madrid. For Rosa, who runs a hair removal business from home, nothing compares to the satisfaction of watching a piping hot dish served on time. Rosa suffers from tinnitus and constantly has both the TV and radio on, but more importantly she no longer feels desired. One night, after her taxi driver husband heads for bed, Rosa dons a slinky black wig and ventures out into the night. Her journey takes her to the central bus station where she forms an unlikely friendship with Radek, an eccentric Polish immigrant. Carmen Machi delivers a perfectly pitched performance. Her running encounters with petty bureaucracy are met with the sort of quiet stoicism of which Buster Keaton would approve, and her subtle transformation from drab housewife to hip-swinging minx is beautifully realised.
