In The Mamas and the Papas director Janine Bakker portrays a lesbian and a gay couple who want to have a baby together and share the upbringing. The film follows them through pregnancy, childbirth and the first months of their newborn. Manon and Edward have been good friends for 15 years. Edward has always wanted to be a father, and together with Manon and Iris he came up with the plan to have a baby together. When Patrick, the new partner of Edward, joins into the plan he is initially very enthusiastic. However, the baby is seeking a lot of attention from everyone, and Patrick feels neglected. Iris, the biological mother, becomes more emotional during the pregnancy and starts to feel unsure about sharing the baby with both men.
