Rui Goulart
Portugal | 2008 | 140mins | 35mm | Colour
Miguel, a chain-smoking, enigmatic young film director, recruits an enthusiastic young crew to help him realise his vision of shooting an equally enigmatic film on 16mm. Despite never seeing anything approaching a script, the crew by and large spend two years following him between Lisbon, Venice and Paris - even when it seems that the whole effort might be just to impress his leading lady. Shot in a clipped and elliptical style, Goulart's film possesses an anarchic humour and an admirable disregard for convention. What comes across initially as wilfully perverse and mannered reveals itself to be a warm and wry celebration of the incidental.
