Paul Merton
Though perhaps best known for his work on TV, notably Have I Got News For You, Paul Merton is also a serious student of silent cinema. Following his highly successful BBC series Paul Merton’s Silent Clowns and the lavish book on the same subject Silent Clowns, we are delighted to welcome Paul Merton to the festival to share his knowledge of silent cinema and his infectious enthusiasm for his beloved silent clowns.
Paul will introduce memorable moments from the films of Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy and Harold Lloyd sharing his insights into their timeless appeal.
This will be followed by a screening of Buster Keaton’s hilarious and astonishing feature Steamboat Bill Jr., which will be shown in its entirety - all beautifully accompanied by world-renowned pianist Neil Brand.
... assisted by the thrilling wit and polish of Brand’s lightening-fingered accompaniment, the sheer finesse of each successive slapstick selection works it’s magic on the audience and the laughter flows more and more freely… go marvel - Daily Telegraph
Suitable for all the family, Silent Clowns promises to be an immensely enjoyable and education evening for lovers of classic cinema, live music, silent comedy and laughing in the dark.
