In association with Cork City Council, we celebrate the centenary of Seamus Murphy with a special screening of Louis Marcus’ acclaimed documentary The Silent Art, screening on a new digital print from the Irish Film Archive.
Louis Marcus is one of Ireland’s most distinguished documentary filmmakers, winning many major international awards including two Academy Award nominations. In 2005, Cork Film Festival honoured Louis with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Louis Marcus will attend the screening and introduce The Silent Art.
A free but ticketed event
The Silent Art
1959 | 14min | Beta | B&W | General Audience
Made with borrowed money and a borrowed 16mm camera, The Silent Art is a simple and luminous tribute to the great sculptor, Seamus Murphy. Against the ringing of the Shandon bells, several of Murphy’s pieces are shown in situ in UCC, in Ballyvourney and in Cork City and the sculptor himself is seen at work sculpting a bust of his daughter Orlagh.
The film has been restored at the request of the Frank O’Connor Library, Cork City Council and Cork Film Festival and has been included in the county-wide programme of events marking the centenary of Murphy’s birth.
