Corona Cork Film Festival to bring Polish Films to the big screen

From October 14 to 21, the Corona Cork Film Festival will screen a diverse selection of Polish feature films, documentaries and short films as the festival pays tribute to a country that has a long rich tradition of filmmaking.

Mick Hannigan, Festival Director of the Corona Cork Film Festival said

“We are delighted to have such strong Polish representation in this year's festival, continuing the great tradition of Polish cinema. There are two controversial and fascinating documentaries from Polish TV; one dealing with collaboration between the Polish church and the communist regime; the other dealing with a tragic 'love affair' between a young woman and an older man. We also present Testosterone which has been a huge success in Poland. We are pleased to be able to present these films to an Irish audience but also to give Polish people in Ireland an opportunity to see the latest in Polish cinema.”

The Corona Cork Film Festival would like to extend a welcoming hand to those from Poland living in Cork and Ireland and would encourage all Polish people to make the prestigious Corona Cork Film Festival their own Polish film festival in Cork. Throughout the course of the week of the Festival, the following Polish films will be screened.

Features Films
Saviour Square: Wednesday October 17, 4pm Cork Opera House
The film portrays the breakdown of an average Polish family grappling with the changing tide of the property market. The latest film by Krzysztof Krauze and Joanna Kos-Krauze, it is a story of guilt and redemption. The film is a heartbreaking picture of human needs, desires, loneliness and the need for a close relationship.
Testosterone: Wednesday October 17, 11.30pm Kino Cinema
Testosterone was a huge hit at the Polish Box Office in 2007 and features some of Poland’s most loved comedic actors. The film is a clever and hilarious take on the constant struggle of men and women to understand each other.

Documentaries
Sick Love: Sunday October 14, 11am Triskel Arts Centre
Sick Love is a story of passion and hate. In a small village close to Zakopane, Jan and Ewa began a relationship. He was 27 and she was 13. The relationship soon took a sharp turn as Jan became controlling and abusive. In a fit of passion Ewa killed Jan and buried his body under the floor of her house. It was assumed by all that Jan had just left. Eva eventually remarried and had a little daughter. Shortly after the birth of her daughter, the police solve the crime and Eva is sentenced to four years in prison. She has dreams of returning to her family but fate is to be cruel to her again.

The Unsubmissive: Sunday October 14, 11am Triskel Arts Centre

The documentary combines unique film archives from the eighties with contemporary statements of senior church figures and IPN (Institute of National Remembrance) historians. The Unsubmissive highlights the struggle faced by Father Tadeusz, President of the Brother Albert Foundation, to reveal the truth regarding the co-operation of some clergymen with Communist secret services thereby creating a valuable and insightful document on the relationship between the Polish Church and its own past.

Short Films
Dragonflies: Monday October 15, 2.30pm Kino Cinema
It is summer so it is time for love, crime and maturation

Suburban Train: Sunday October 20, 2.30pm Kino Cinema
