4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days
Romania, 1987, Otilia and Gabita are students residing in a girls’ dormitory. Gabita confides that she’s pregnant. Having decided that she does not want to keep the child she has arranged to have it terminated. Due to the illegal nature of the operation she has to rely on the services of a Mr Bebe, who was recommended through a friend of a friend. Having set up a meeting with him she sends Otilia as an intermediary.

Gabita fails to follow Bebe’s precise instructions resulting in Otilia being sent unwittingly to the wrong hotel. By the time Otilia and Bebe do meet he becomes enraged by Gabita’s non-appearance. When the three finally meet it is clear that Gabita has been less than forthcoming about how far gone in her pregnancy she is. The implications are clear to Bebe. In the eyes of the law this alters the procedure to a potential murder charge.
This raises the stakes and accordingly the menacing Mr Bebe raises the price. However, it’s a price that neither girl expected to pay.

I am awed by the purity of the storytelling… the conviction of the performances and the passionate concern for the characters. – Sight and Sound

This was a great film. It was a pleasure to watch every second of it. - Orhan Pamuk, novelist and Cannes jury member

Palme d’Or – Cannes Film Festival, 2007
