Wendy, played with aplomb by Laura Linney, is a self-medicating failing playwright; who constantly applies for grants so she can afford to give up her temping jobs.
Philip Seymour Hoffman plays her brother, Jon; a college professor who is an expert on the alienating works of Brecht. Immersed in their separate lives, the siblings have little contact with each other and have drifted apart emotionally and geographically over the years. Wendy and Jon are suddenly plucked from their very absorbed lives and forced to care for a parent who never much bothered to care for them.
Forced to face the past, they rediscover the eccentricities that drove each other crazy and have the ultimate sibling rivalry battle over how to handle their father’s final days.
Prickly humour, strong writing, excellent direction and magnificent acting... The Savages is note perfect - Screen International
