Widely considered to be the master of French animation, Michel Ocelet has already brought Kirikou, The Sorceress and Prince and Princesses to the screen. His latest film is a glorious, classic fairy tale with stunningly beautiful animation, in which messages of co-operation, open mindedness, religious and racial tolerance, respect for women and other cultures exude throughout.
The story follows the lives of two boys, blue-eyed Azur, the son of a French noble man, and Asmar, the son of his African nurse. The boys are brought up together as brothers but are separated in a cruel twist of fate. Years later they are re-united as adults in a magical quest to rescue a fairy princess who was the subject of their bedtime stories.
