Wonderfully lighthearted and blackhearted, You Kill Me stars Sir Ben Kingsley in a career-high performance as a hit man with a drink problem. Although Frank Falenczyk loves his job with his Polish mob family, he messes up a critical assignment that puts the family business in peril and forces his uncle to send him to San Francisco to clean up his act.
Frank is not a touchy-feely kind of guy, but he starts going to AA meetings, gets a sponsor and a job and he falls for the tart-tongued Laurel, a woman who is dangerously devoid of boundaries. Meanwhile, things aren’t going well in Buffalo where an upstart Irish gang is threatening the family business. When violence erupts, Frank is forced to return home and with Laurel’s help, faces old rivals on new terms.
Kingsley and Leoni produce a dynamically playful chemistry while Luke Wilson as his laid-back gay sponsor adds comedic grace notes, in this hugely enjoyable romantic comedy thriller.
Keeping the viewer agreeably off-kilter, John Dahl’s latest walk on the wild side, like the director’s Last Seduction or Joy Ride, get serious comedic mileage from playing noirish absurdities deadpan-straight with hilariously memorable moments. - Variety
