The mysteries of the priesthood and vocation are explored in this story of a young man who, caught up in an existential crisis, decides to join a monastery.
Seeking to find himself Andrea embarks upon a novitiate, during which the order will examine whether he is genuinely has a ‘calling’ to take his vows of servitude. He finds himself struggling with questions that have as much to do with spirituality and the unknowable as with issues of sacrifice and self-denial.
As the priests instruct him in matters of belief, Andrea discovers that there is more to the religious community of priests, monks, novices and retired clergy than silence and prayer. Tensions surface as doubts begin to creep into Andrea’s mind and those of some of the other novitiates, leading to a gnawing sense of emptiness and frustration. What, he wonders, is the true path to enlightenment?
Bursts with powerful originality and some very deep thinking on screen, along with a tense, involving atmosphere. - Variety |
