Exodus brings together international artists led by Penny Woolcock, including sculptor Antony Gormley, and songwriters Rufus Wainwright, Brian Eno and Imogen Heap, alongside local musicians, singers, actors, costume-makers and setbuilders to create a timeless story of identity, migration and the great movement of peoples across the world in search of a promised land.
Plagues of lice, locusts, frogs and flies, a 25-metre high sacrificial sculpture and a cast of thousands dramatically transform the south coast town of Margate into a colourful and contemporary setting for an epic film inspired by the Old Testament Book of Exodus, the story of Moses, in which many of the cast are non-actors from the Margate area, themselves very involved in the film’s themes of migration and asylum.
Penny Woolcock’s gripping Exodus is a provocative, searingly political updating of the Old Testament story, with the Pharaoh as a right-wing politician and Moses as a terrorist. Shot in widescreen, with an eye-popping vision of dystopia. - Variety |
