Dream Diary
Colin Downey
Ireland | 2006 | 56mins | Beta | Black & White | Subtitled |
|
A schoolgirl keeps a diary of her dreams and her encounters with a young artist. However, her routine is upset by the arrival of her widowed father’s mistress. When the young artist ceases visiting her she hatches a plan to win him back.
Famed for the dream-like logic that marks his earlier films Downey introduces a dark, almost Cronenberg-like, element of body horror to his metier but suffuses it with his own unique vision. Dark, shadowy and full of the sensual horror fans of Charles Burns’ graphic novels would be familiar with and yet oftentimes light and playfully humourous. This marks another step forward for the young filmmaker.
