Drawing Restraint 9
Matthew Barney
USA | 2005 | 135mins | 35mm | Colour | Subtitled |
|
A film by renowned artist Matthew Barney with a soundtrack composed by real-life spouse, Björk, represents the first creative collaboration of two of most dynamic and influential forces in music and fine art.
Both star in this almost wordless narrative. They are welcomed aboard a Japanese whaling ship afloat in Nagasaki Bay as “Occidental Guests” and undergo a complicated regime of preparations for a traditional Shinto wedding ceremony.
Shot in Nagasaki Bay, this film’s delves into the relationship between self-imposed resistance and creativity, using the creation, transportation and evolution of vast sculpture of liquid vaseline, called ‘The Field’, as its key symbol.
A tapestry of sensuous, striking and sometimes disturbing imagery - Variety |
