A film interpretation of the best-selling and critically lauded memoirs of Jean-Dominique Bauby. At the age 43, he was the charismatic, successful editor-in-chief of the French style magazine Elle; a man renowned for his lust for life.
On December 1995, he suffered a massive stroke and fell into a coma, he finally regained consciousness 20 days later to find himself the victim of a rare “locked-in” syndrome - mentally cognitive and alert but completely unable to use his speech or any movement.
Bullishly, almost arrogantly, Bauby refused to just lie there and wait to die; he learned to master the few remaining bodily functions he could still control. By developing a very subtle and intricate series of signals by only blinking his left eyelid, he managed to find a way of communicating. The book took about 200,000 blinks to write and each word took approximately two minutes.
