Every love song tells the same story: Too many people love you... I could never live without you. Les Chansons d’Amour tells that story too.
Ismaël is a young journalist who has his life thrown into disarray after the sudden death of his girlfriend Julie. Having trouble dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy, he finds himself alternating between Julie’s needy sister, his co-worker (and occasional threesome partner) Alice, and Erwan, who is a naïve, young college student, consumed with a serious crush on him.
The streets of Paris are romanticised to maximum effect in this contemporary musical. As the characters become increasingly unable to project their true feelings toward one another, they resort to using musical numbers as outlets, as vehicles of emotional expression. The songs, whose subject matters range from ménage-a-trois to death, blend seamlessly in with the dialogue to tell the story of our young protagonists.
This is an exceedingly French affair – love, life, passion and sensitivity are all exalted in song for the audience’s savouring. Moments of incandescence are intertwined with melancholia and sad-eyed romanticism which helps the film to achieve a rare naturalness and nonchalance. |
