A fictional love story, set against real historical events, namely Hungary’s 1956 Olympics water polo victory over the Soviet Union in what has been described as the most violent match in the history of the sport.
Karcsi Szabó is the national team’s best player and leads a fairly charmed, carefree life as a result. Until, that is, the political climate starts to seriously change. A brush with the secret police for insulting a Russian opponent is the first thing to wake him up to his lack of freedom. There is a growing feeling of public dissent against their Soviet Union ruled government, a new breed of patriotism has built up quickly and furtive talk of an uprising is in the air.
A rousing and highly effective tribute to the men and women who fought in the battle... there won’t be a dry eye in the house at its climax - Screen Daily |
