Those were the days my friend!
Sir Henry’s and The Shed in Turner’s Cross, both Cork institutions, both gone but not forgotten, both now celebrated on film.
It was not the physical charms of either which evokes such warm memories. Rather the atmosphere generated by those who attended them and there was of course a large overlap in those frequenting both shrines - Saturday night, Sunday afternoon!
Keith O’Shea has interviewed those centrally involved with Sir Henry’s Sweat Nights and assembled a nostalgic but honest account of how Sweat originated and ended. Ed Godsell has documented the last few weeks of The Shed training his camera on the Shed-end itself and recording the cheers and the banter and the exultation as Cork City win the league.
We think the best way to see these emotion-filled documentaries is to, in some way, replicate the communal spirit of the fans of both establishments. Sitting politely in a darkened cinema does not seem quite appropriate.
We’ve opted to screen them in another Cork institution, The Bodega. So, come early, get a table with your friends and sit back and enjoy the heady nostalgia evoked in Sir Henry’s and The Shed.
