Cork Film Festival announces list of eligible films for the Prix UIP

Since its inception in 1956 the short film has been an integral component of the Cork Film Festival. In 2006 the Cork Film Festival will continue its love affair with the short and has the unique honour of being only one of fourteen European Festivals to host the prestigious Prix UIP, in association with the European Film Academy.

The Festival has long been a passionate promoter of the short film and it is a reflection of the esteem in which the Cork Film Festival is held internationally that they have been invited to join the short but prestigious list of festivals hosting this award.

The Prix UIP Cork is open to European filmmakers of films made in 2005 or in 2006. All genres are eligible and the film must be no longer than 15 minutes. The winner of the Prix UIP Cork will then be shortlisted (along with the winner from the other host festivals) for the overall European Film Academy Short Film Prix UIP.

Out of a total of 2,300 international shorts submitted to the Cork Film Festival, 64 shorts will participate in the international competition and 29 of these short films from 18 European countries will also compete for the much sought after Prix UIP. These 29 films will also compete in the festival’s international competition.

Members of the public will be given a wonderful insight into the diversity of filmmaking in Europe as films from a wide range of countries including Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, Sweden, France, Norway, Belgium, Switzerland, Norway, Wales, Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands and Greece will be screened in the European Short Film Grand Prix UIP. The Cork Film Festival has long been a platform for Irish filmmakers and is a passionate supporter of films produced in Ireland. It is wonderful to note that four films which were made in Ireland will compete in this prestigious European competition.

Mick Hannigan, Director of the Cork Film Festival said

“It gives us great pleasure to host the prestigious Prix UIP for the first time and I invite members of the public to attend screenings and view the wealth of talent that exists within the European Film industry.”

The 51st Cork Film Festival will take place from October 8-15 and will screen an eclectic range of features, documentaries and shorts. Tickets for all screenings and the Festival programme will be available from September 30th on www.corkfilmfest.org
