Cork Film Festival opens up the world of cinema to Irish students
The 51st Cork Film Festival which will run from 8th to 15th October 2006, offers film lovers an exciting programme of events which include big budget films, world cinema, innovative independent films, international documentaries, an Irish showcase and short films from all over the world.
Of particular interest to secondary school students are the educational screenings which are a core element of the 51st Cork Film Festival programme. The festival is a great occasion for students studying for the 2007/2008 English Leaving Certificate to see the curriculum come to life on the big screen as films such as The Truman Show and the Oscar-winning My Left Foot are screened. A must for students who are studying French is Le Grand Voyage which tells the wonderful story of a growing bond between a French Moroccan father and his son as they embark on a trip from France to the sacred site of Mecca as part of the father’s annual religious pilgrimage. This film is in French and will be subtitled.
Students concerned with environmental issues will gain a unique insight into the intricate world of environmental politics from the documentary An Inconvenient Truth. The film offers a passionate and inspirational look at Al Gore’s fervent crusade to halt global warming's deadly progress in its tracks by exposing the myths and misconceptions that surround it. This screening is specifically targeted at transition year students and those who are studying CSPE.
An integral component of the Educational Programme of the festival is the Youth Jury Competition. This exciting competition which is sponsored by the Irish Examiner offers 3 students the opportunity to attend screenings of international short films throughout the festival and to choose the winner of the prestigious Youth Jury Award. To enter the competition students must write a critical review in no more than 300 words of a film of their choice. For entry details please see www.corkfilmfest.org. The closing date for the competition is Monday October 2nd.
Eoin Ó Catháin, Education Officer of the Cork Film Festival said
“Our education programme which is extremely innovative and varied highlights that filmmaking is fun and it is an art that is accessible to all. I encourage students of all ages to embrace the Education Programme and to discover the wonderful world of filmmaking and cinema.”
Since the festival’s inception in 1956, the short film has been an integral component. In 2006 the festival continues its love affair with the short by bringing Irish and International Shorts to schools all around Cork city and county. The Shorts in Classroom Programme gives students a memorable insight into the world of filmmaking and the art of the short film. The Programme is directed towards the transition year film course and introduces a critical analysis to film as a medium.
This year, as part of the festival, students will have the opportunity to watch a selection of the internationally acclaimed Aardman Shorts which are made by the Aardman Studios, world leaders in the art of cartoon animation. This eclectic programme will also include a screening of the colourful and three-times Oscar-winning Wallace and Gromit Shorts. These screenings, which are one of the best examples of stop-motion animation, will be one of the highlights of the education programme and should not be missed.
Voice Our Concernisan exciting new human rights education project from Amnesty International which brought together filmmakers and students from all over Ireland to create films exploring human rights. A selection of these films will be screened at the Cork Film Festival. Among the themes which will be explored during the festival include refugee rights, the asylum process, homelessness and inequality. Following the screening, a member of Amnesty International will give a short talk on the work of Amnesty and how some of the issues in the films are being addressed.
