Controversial Film To Open Cork Film Festival.

Cork Film Festival announced today that the opening film of this year’s event is the controversial film Death Of A President. The film which recently won the FIPRESCI Critics Award at the Toronto Film Festival uses the central premise of the assassination of George W. Bush to explore what might happen to America if such an event were to occur.

Toronto Co-Director Noah Cowan described Death of A President as
“easily the most dangerous and breathtakingly original film I have encountered this year.”

The film which was financed by Channel 4 recorded sell out screenings in the Toronto Film Festival and has just been bought by film distributors around the world. Cork Film Festival Director, Mick Hannigan said

“We are delighted to have secured the European premiere of Death Of A President. This is urgent, important cinema, raising vital questions about politics and the mass media, about liberty and democracy. It confirms the importance of cinema as a means of making sense of the world. For us it is the perfect opening film.”

Director Gabriel Range’s previous film, The Day Britain Stopped questioned what might happen if Britain’s transportation system suddenly failed and was his first experiment with this style of filmmaking.

The film’s Irish producer Ed Guiney said
Death of a President is a great cinematic achievement and we are excited to be screening it before a large audience in Cork. Mick and his team at the Cork Film Festival have been huge supporters of our films and we have had both Magdalene Sisters and Disco Pigs as opening night film in the past.”

The Director of Death of A President, Gabriel Range and its producers Simon Finch (who co-wrote the script with Range) and Ed Guiney will be in Cork for the European premier of the film which takes place at 8.30pm in the Cork Opera House on October 8th.

The Full Festival Programme for the 51st Cork Film Festival which runs from
October 8-15 will be announced on Thursday 28 September. Tickets for all events and screenings will be available from September 30 on www.corkfilmfest.org and in the Festival Box Office which is located in Kelly’s Post Office, 15 Grand Parade Cork.
