Kirsten Dunst excels in this revisionist and modernist take on Marie Antoinette. Often maligned, passionately debated and ultimately a misunderstood young woman, Coppola’s Marie Antoinette is a sweet but lonely teenager thrust into a decadent and scandal-plagued world on the eve of disaster.
With unprecedented access to Versailles, Coppola builds a towering cake of period froth; a world of riches and indulgent whims, all beautifully realised through costume, set and a soundtrack of modern pop that curiously fits.
The rigid etiquette, constant domestic fighting and relentless scandalous gossip of the opulent French royal court are also perfectly recreated but doused throughout by a spirit of fun.
This screening will be preceded by Cork Film Festival's Awards Ceremony. |
