Edmond
Stuart Gordon
USA | 2005 | 82mins | 35mm | Colour
Jaded businessman Edmond Burke impulsively resolves
to change his timid ways on the night a fortune teller
informs him that his life has gone off track. Frustrated
by his sterile marriage he falls into an argument with
his wife before storming off into the nearest bar. There,
Edmond finds himself talking with a man who freely shares
his bigoted views about the role of African-Americans,
gays and Jews in society. Intoxicated by a newfound
sense of ire and purpose, the veneer of self-control
he has thus far exercised in his life begins to peel
away.
As he trawls the seedy underbelly of New York City
– the strip clubs, gambling dens, and brothels
– Edmond’s exchanges with the low life he
encounters has the effect of sealing his shocking transformation.
In the most unexpected of ways, he finds himself responding
in kind.
Long-time Mamet associate Macy is perfectly cast
as the meek everyman coming to terms with his inner
aggressor. It’s an emotionally naked performance.
