Yaguine and Fodé, two teenage Guineans, are
found dead in the landing gear compartment of an aeroplane
in Brussels. The only person to bear witness to their
tale is their childhood pal Khésso, a peanut
seller.
When we meet the two boys they are, despite being at
the beginning of their summer vacation, acutely disillusioned
by the lack of possibilities that lie on their horizon.
They spend most of their time quietly observing the
futility and the tedium of life around them.
Their homeland seems to offer them little possibilities,
so driven by a mixture of ambition and pride –
Frodé dreams of being a pilot yet he has never
left their town – the two boys quietly hatch their
getaway. If their gesture is futile at least their self-belief
offers hope.
