Rocky

John G. Avildsen – USA | 1976 | 119mins

One of the most enduring and inspiring sports films of all-time, Rocky is a classic underdog tale of a struggling boxer trying to make the big time. This irresistible story of a man who gives his all won Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. A real labour of love project for Sylvester Stallone, which ended up catapulting him to superstardom was inspired by a Chuck Wepner fight against Muhammad Ali. Stallone wrote the screenplay in 3 days, and insisted on playing the lead role of Rocky Balboa.
When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed visits Philadelphia, his managers want to set up an exhibition match between Creed and a struggling boxer, touting the fight as a chance for a “nobody” to become a “somebody”. This is the chance Rocky has been waiting for.
