Rwanda. Through Us, Humanity...
Rwanda. A Travers Nous, L’Humanité...

Marie-France Collard
Belgium | 2006 | 105mins | Beta | Colour | Subtitled

Based on the successful stage show Rwanda 94, which was based on the atrocities committed during the Rwandan conflict, this documentary was filmed in April 2004 on the sites where these crimes were committed. Significantly, this was done before survivors and others and in the context of the tenth anniversary of the genocide of the Tutsis and the massacres of Hutu moderates.

Can theatre question reality when the audience contains the main characters in the very story being re-told on stage? The intense, cathartic, active answer of the Rwandan audience brings to the fore the current concerns of the survivors. What is life like for them, ten years after the genocide?

Echoing the issues of the play, this film enables the survivors of the genocide to speak out about their current situation during this trying period of mourning. They express their profound resentment towards the international community for abandoning them during the genocide, but also towards the exclusion, discriminations and violence to which they must still endure today.
