Nolens Volens: Whether Willing Or Unwilling
Rod Stoneman
Ireland | 2005 | 47mins | DVD | Colour
The first instalment of a three-part film examining contemporary culture and politics. Significantly disparate levels of wealth and power, prosperity and possibility are to be found across the world. Criticism and dissent has been marginalised in an increasingly pervasive image system. Cultural diversity is in grave danger – as Alpha Oumar Konare, President of Mali put it, We are standing in a burning library.
There is a significant gap between the social potential of culture and the actual participation in artistic experience as part of everyday life for the majority of people.
In the contemporary bleak cultural and political landscape I had reached a point where it became clear to me that most of the formative cultural and political aspirations of my youth were unlikely to be fulfilled in my lifetime. I wanted to search for signs of optimism and renewal. – Director’s statement.
