The Netherlands | 2005 | 70mins | Beta | Colour and B&W | Subtitled
This documentary reconstructs the life of former terrorist Hans-Joachim Klein and shows how the personal events of one’s life can lead to radicalism and violence.
On 21 December 1975, six terrorists from the Revolutionary Cells, led by the notorious Carlos ‘The Jackal’ took seventy OPEC officials hostage in Vienna. Three people were killed, Klein was seriously wounded. The terrorists managed to escape to Algiers but by the time they had reached their destination, Klein was more sceptical of terrorism and realised he wanted out. This he managed with the help of a comrade from the student movement, Daniel Cohn-Bendit.
Klein now lives in Normandy and has to deal with the guilt of his militant past on a daily basis. Archival footage supports his account of a young man’s descent into terrorism and back. |
