Eileen Elsey
The Short film as a site of Play and Experimentation
The short film at its best is not a training ground for features,
but a form in its own right. The creativity and diversity of British
and Irish short filmmaking is impressive. Are commissioning and
funding processes making it difficult for truly creative work to
get made? Are digital and electronic processes of production, distribution
and exhibition enabling us to see the work? Through specific examples
of filmmakers working in live action and animation drama, I consider
the impact of contemporary processes on short filmmaking.
Eileen Elsey is the assistant editor of the Journal
of Media Practice, a member of the Writers Guild and on the boards
of the Brief Encounters and Animated Encounters Film Festivals.
Eileen co-authored (with Andrew Kelly) book, In Short: A Guide
to Short Film-making in the Digital Age Published by the British
Film Institute in 2002
