In 1993, a group of queer Sydney filmmakers, students and others
approached Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras with a view to establishing
an independent organisation whose primary focus was queer film and
screen culture. A major aim was to establish a festival that was
owned and operated by the lesbian and gay community.
The Mardi Gras Film Festival has grown considerably since 1993.
It is now one of Australia's largest film festivals of any kind,
and one of the top four queer film festivals in the world. It is
highly regarded by filmmakers all over the world and receives hundreds
of entries each year. Local distributors and exhibitors also see
it as an important way of promoting gay and lesbian films in this
territory.
Queer Screen is a membership-based community organisation and is
committed to screening films by, for and about lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender and intersex people. These groups reflect the sexual
and gender diversity of Australian populations and are also the
main audiences attending Queer Screen events.
My Queer Career is the annual Australian and New Zealand queer
short film competition held during the Mardi Gras Film Festival.
The competition attracts a diverse array of entries from up and
coming filmmakers and is keenly monitored by festival programmers
worldwide, operating as a launching pad for Australian queer cinema
internationally. We warmly welcome David Pearce, Programmer with
Queerscreen to Cork to present these programmes.
