Live Music On Film
Film Ist
As the Film Festival celebrates its 50th birthday, it reflects on
the key influencers of early cinema. Assembled by Gustav Deutsch,
Film Ist is a unique collection of silent moving pictures from the
first thirty years of film history. This step back in time in cinema
will be brought to life by live musical performances from well known
film musicians including the world renowned Christian Fennesz. Pioneering
digital improvisers Dafeldecker, Siewert and Stangl will also provide
the spontaneous soundtrack to a live re-editing of Gustav DeutschÕs
meta-cinematographic epic Film Ist. There is a strong element of
improvisation involved which makes every Film Ist performance unique
and very much linked to the specific venue where it is taking place.
This unique innovative event will take place at 9pm on October 8th
in Millennium Hall in Cork.
George Melies
This year the festival will bring the work of George Melies, one
of the pioneers of early cinema at the end of the nineteenth century,
to the big screen. Melies' unique black and white silent films will
be presented by his granddaughter, Marie Helene, and her son will
provide live musical entertainment for the evening on a grand piano.
The evening will include a screening of "A Trip to the Moon", one
of the most popular Melies films which will be instantly recognizable
to audiences. The Melies family maintain the old performance tradition
by travelling around the world and their presence in Cork will be
a once in a lifetime experience that is sure to be one of the highlights
of the 50th Cork Film Festival.
