A sprawling, grey, miserable Mexico City is the background of
the new film by Carlos Reygadas, who caused an international sensation
with Japón.
Lovesick Marcos, a chauffeur, secretly desires Ana, the liberated
daughter of the General for whom he works. The young woman prostitutes
herself for her own pleasure and as a form of rebellion, in a high-end
brothel to where Marcos regularly drives her. When he tells Ana
that he kidnapped a child with his possessive wife, a bond of secrecy
and intimacy is formed.
Marcos, plagued with self-loathing and remorse, becomes more and
more adrift from his wife and finds himself wandering around the
unforgiving city searching for redemption. Soon he's doing things
he never dreamt of, including joining a mass pilgrimage to the Mexico
City Basilica.
A difficult yet rewarding work, one which establishes its maker
as one of the true visionaries of contemporary cinema. Edinburgh

Reygadas' ambitious and visionary work is a tour-de-force interrogation
of the deplorable hypocrisies of the world and the senseless unfairness
of life, as personified in Mexico's struggling working class...
that offers some of the most incredible images of Mexico City ever
seen onscreen. - Toronto Film Festival
