Some Like It Hot
Billy Wilder - USA | 1959 | 120mins
This screwball comedy, consistently named the funniest film of all
time in polls is the perfect drive-in movie. Load up on puns and bring
your friends, to witness or revisit a great ensemble performance by
Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. Two struggling musicians
witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre and try to find a way out
of the city before they are found and killed by the mob. The only
job that will pay their way is an all girl band so the two dress up
as women. In addition to hiding, each has his own problems; One falls
for another band member but can't tell her his gender, and the other
has a rich suitor who will not take "N" for an answer. |

Raging Bull
Martin Scorsese - USA | 1980 | 129mins
Twenty-five years on and the question is 'is it still the best boxing
film ever made?' "No it's probably the best sports film ever
made". Arguably the best movie Scorsese didn't win an Oscar for
and a perfect performance by Robert de Niro, who manages to play both
an athletic man at his prime and peak as well as a man when he is
in the gutter, still convinced he's amongst the stars. Based on the
life and career of boxer Jake LaMotta, Raging Bull focuses on Jake's
rage and violence which make him virtually unstoppable in the ring.
The same anger also drives Jake to beat his wife and his brother Joey,
and sends Jake down a self-destructive spiral of paranoia and rage. |
