Focus on Ben van Lieshout
Sunday 16th | 11.30am | Kino Cinema

We celebrate the work of Ben van Lieshout in this tribute programme, and warmly welcome him to the festival to introduce these outstanding films.

Ben van Lieshout is an award-winning director, screenwriter and producer who lectures at the Utrecht School of the Arts in the Netherlands. Amongst his canon of work, three arresting and resonant short documentaries stand out - The Zone (De Zone, 1999), Night At The Mall (Winkelhart, 2001) and Allotment (Lapje Grond, 2003); which have all screened in competition in Cork and other international festivals, garnering many honours and awards. In 2004, he directed a documentary, Petersburg Places And Paintings, on the Russian artist Tatyana Yassievich -

I don't paint the people themselves. Rather, I paint the public places through which they move en masse, bearing their emotions and cares with them. Stations, parks, cafes, waiting rooms.
This aesthetic could well be attributed to the powerful cinematic poetry of The Zone and Night At The Mall - where geographic space speaks for absent humanity. In Allotment, poetry and people come together in celebration of space.

The Zone
1999 | 18mins | 35mm | Colour | Subtitled
The Zone is an austerely visual film that throws a nerve wracking and revealing light on a typically Dutch phenomenon, de afwerplek, roughly translatable as 'come place' -the place where prostitutes meet their clients.

Night At The Mall
2001 | 18mins | 35mm | Colour | Subtitled
A highly stylised piece depicting an urban concrete jungle emerging as a versatile battered organism used in a continuous, contrasting and bizarre way.

The Allotment
2003 | 24mins | 35mm | Colour | Subtitled
An affectionate portrait of a seemingly insignificant phenomenon: the allotment garden. Gardeners and poets take to the stage in a visual poetic film.
