Cork Film Festival Launches Search For 100 Great Short
Films At Cannes
Cork Film Festival used this year's Cannes Film Festival,
to launch a major element of its program for 2005 - an international
search for one hundred great short films. The Cork festival
has already announced a major symposium dedicated to the short
film, to mark its 50th anniversary and Cork's designation
as European Capital of Culture in 2005.
The Short Film Symposium is one of the main elements of the
festival's programme in 2005 and has financial backing from
the 2005 office. It is intended as a serious enquiry into
the art and history of the short form. International critics,
filmmakers and professionals will be invited to Cork in October
2005 and a program of events is in preparation, with seminars,
screenings and celebrations. The festival will also publish
a book, on the results of the search for '100 Great Short
Films'.
Speaking at the launch in Cannes, Cork Film Festival director,
Mick Hannigan, called for "participation in this enquiry
into the great short films. We now invite the international
film community to turn its attention to this wonderful and
distinct art form."
Participants in the Cannes festival were invited to nominate
what they considered to be the best short films in the history
of cinema and nomination cards were distributed widely througout
Cannes. According to Hannigan, "this is not an attempt
to establish a definitive canon of great shorts, but rather
to champion and celebrate great examples of what we believe
to be a critically neglected art form."
Director of Cork 2005, John Kennedy commented: "This
symposium is a landmark for film culture and for the Cork
Film Festival, long time champions of the short film. The
event offers a valuable opportunity for audiences to explore
a neglected chapter of cinematic history and is sure to have
lasting impact in the critical appreciation of the short form.
