Jonathan Nossiter

USA | 2003 | 135mins | 35mm | Colour

“Wine is simply the only product on earth which is as complex as human beings”. From the huge wine estates of Napa Valley in California to the bijou vineyards of Tuscany, Mondovino weaves together the family sagas of billionaire Napa Valley power brokers, the rivalry of two aristocratic Florentine dynasties and the fight of three generations of a Burgundian family to preserve their few acres of land.

French wine consultant Michel Rolland has been described as the Steven Spielberg of the French wine market. He helps clients churn out bestsellers in 12 countries according to a formula which opponents of globalisation say is tailored to U.S. tastes and is destroying diversity – the same accusations they level at big budget Hollywood films.

An insightful and affectionate glimpse into the behind-the scenes struggles of modern-day winemaking, Nossiter unveils a rapidly changing industry where independent producers are pitted against vast multinationals in a battle for survival.

On top of this thematic wealth is a gallery of warmly observed, engaging characters. Nossiter’s film successfully and sometimes poignantly shows how wine production is inexorably linked with culture and civilization but is slowly losing its identity and soul, how the almost religious relationship between the winemaker and his terroir has become secondary to technology and marketing -Variety

This screening of Mondovino will be introduced by one of the filmmakers.

Following the very popular inaugural Slow Food event last year; we continue our commitment to the Slow Food concept with this very special evening. The Slow Food principle holds dear the right to pleasure and we hope you will enjoy this heady mixture of film and food.

MONDOVINO will be accompanied by the best in Cork-produced food from local Slow Food members and by a very special organic wine from Italy. We welcome from Italy, winegrower Federica Magrini who produces VIGNAI DA DULINE (Friuili), which represents all the best in wine production. With thanks to Federica and to Enrico Fantasia; we will be sampling this wonderful wine. Federica, and her partner Lorenzo Mocchiutti, run this small, organic estate of 4.5 hectares. Vignai da Duline's total production amounts to only slightly over 1,000 cases a year, but they are more concerned with the quality of the wines they produce than with sheer volume.
