Wednesday 13th October
The Mitchell and Kenyon Collection
- A Preview
For around seventy years, 800 rolls of early nitrate film
sat in sealed barrels in the basement of a shop. Now miraculously
redis-covered and undergoing restoration, this amazing visual
record of everyday life in Britain and Ireland at the beginning
of the twentieth century is the most exciting film discovery
of recent times and promises to radically transform film history.
As part of Cork European Capital of Culture 2005, the Festival
will next year work with the British Film Institute in the
presentation of the extensive Cork material filmed by the
Mitchell and Kenyon company. This material shows scenes of
Cork City centre, the military barracks and the Great Exhibition
amongst others. Jan Faull, of the British Film Institute,
will give a taster presentation to archivists, librarians
and film historians on the background to the Mitchell and
Kenyon Collection.

Saturday 16th, October
In Conversation
with
Christopher Robbins
Christopher Robbins is the author of The Empress of Ireland,
which to our mind, is the film book of the year. He was an
impoverished writer when he first stepped into the shabby
Belgravia drawing room of Ireland's most prolific film director.
Brian Desmond Hurst is an unfamiliar name to most; but in
fact enjoyed great success in the film world over many years.
He captured the young writer's imagination during their adventures
in London, Ireland, Malta and North Africa (plus a brief and
hilarious visit to Kinsale in the 70's). Provoked by Robbin's
wonderful book, we decided to pay tribute to The Empress by
presenting some of his best work each day in Cork Opera House
at 2.00pm. We are delighted to welcome Christopher Robbins
to Cork to introduce some of the films but also to participate
in a public interview about this unique and eccentric friendship.
'I urge you to climb aboard the unique and hilarious ride
that is Brian Desmond HurstÕs life - a truly delumptious and
exotic caravan of an adventure' Richard E. Grant
