This year’s ‘Made in Cork’ selection is expanded to two programmes, one comprised of shorts and the other of two documentary profiles. The former, rather than the traditional eight shorts, has grown to twelve reflecting the strength of the entries received. It’s worth stating that the selection process, like for the other programmes, is entirely subjective, reflecting our own tastes and biases. That films are not included is no reflection on their merit.

However, we believe that all of the films selected have qualities, which are special. They range from a 30-second vignette, to animation, to comedy, to documentary, to very personal dramas using archive footage and family footage. The subjects range from Brazilian butchers to alcoholic monkeys, from colourful flashers to languorous teenagers. The longer documentaries are portraits of venerable poet Desmond O’Grady and avant garde musician Giordai Ó Laoghaire.

Mention must also be made of films in other sections of the programme, Carol O’Keeffe’s exploration of gender identity, Written On The Soul and Colm McCarthy’s Perfection, winner of the Cork Film Centre script award. And we must also mention Peter Foott who has progressed from a ‘Made In Cork’ short to success at the recent Venice and Los Angeles Film Festivals.

The first film to be screened in the programme is the late Ronan Phelan’s wonderful, and now classic, Gangs of Waterfall. We devote the ‘Made In Cork’ programme to his memory.

Join Irish poet and translator, Desmond O’Grady, as he takes us through the labyrinth lanes of his life, from the parochial trappings of Limerick in the fifties, where he went to school with Richard Harris, to his chosen exile around Europe, Egypt and America. With readings from this wandering Celt’s numerous collections this film reflects a portrait of the artist as an older man living in Kinsale, and documents the experience of the poet as an Irish European.

May Fame

May Fame documents the life of Giordai Ó Laoghaire, the Cork based electro-acoustic composer and veteran of the avant-garde, as he returns to his native Cork and attempts to shed the baggage of his musical past. But can this ever happen?
