Set in the familiar microcosm of bourgeois society, this
is a brilliantly observed, social comedy of contemporary Paris
that is at once exotic and completely recognizable, and explores
conundrums about interpersonal relationships. The observations
are sharp, the acting is superb, the dialogue is rich with
irony and biting subtext and the script is honed and razor-sharp.
The central figure is Lolita, a young woman very self-conscious
about her body which doesn't look like the thin women she
sees in advertisements on TV and in magazines. She puts considerable
energy into singing lessons and into trying to gain her father's
attention. Her dad, Etienne, a successful author and publisher,
is about as self-absorbed as they come. He lives with his
second wife, Karine, a preoccupied, young, beautiful woman
whose presence only increases Lolita's insecurity.
A story of human beings who know exactly what they'd do
if they were somebody else, but can't handle being themselves
very well and who are simply struggling to find out who they
are.
