48th CORK FILM FESTIVAL EDUCATION & SCHOOLS'
PROGRAMME
ATTENTION OF: ENGLISH, FRENCH & ART DEPARTMENTS
This year we have put together an extensive programme for
students and teachers alike. We have a programme of three
features, one documentary, an international
shorts programme, seminars and workshops.
With the onset of film studies in the English Leaving Certificate
curriculum, there has been an increased interest in film analysis,
critical interpretation, cinematography and direction. With
the increasingly visual nature of modern society, film studies
provide a diversity in interpretation and analysis that will
aid the student's ability in a predominantly text based education
to expand upon their own critical ability with more confidence
in other subjects. For those students whose interests lie
in filmmaking and the process of, we have organised two showcases
and information from the Fresh Film Festival and the
Irish Film Board. Both focus upon young filmmaking
and schools in-house projects on filmmaking. So please
look into either of these wonderful opportunities to bring
filmmaking and production into your school.
To aid teachers with 'film in the classroom', we have organised,
in conjunction with the Second Level Support Service, workshops
designed to explore and develop strategies for teaching film
in the English classroom, encompassing; reading film in the
context of comparative study, film as a preparation for writing
and film in teaching Shakespearean Drama. We hope to continue
this partnership in education with the Second Level Support
Service and to organise events for teachers and students during
the academic year as well as the festival. There will be a
forum in December for teachers to share experience and insights
into teaching film and to give feedback from their experience
of the workshops and the students' response. This will be
a great opportunity and we hope you will attend.
Our first film for schools, is the 'American Classic', Witness,
directed by Peter Weir in 1985. As a prescribed film for the
leaving Cert. English Paper, it would be a great opportunity
to screen it as no doubt it will be a popular choice for students
to select, when answering. The film is being proved by the
education dept. in the Irish Film Institute. There will be
a handout available to teachers on Witness and
a questions and answer session for students following the
screening. Screenings of étre et Avoir &
Whale Rider will also be presented by the Irish
Film Institute with a Q&A session for students following
both. There will also be an opportunity to see the wonderful
Argentinean Feature, Valentin, which has been
selected for our main programme.
From the bizarre to the tragic, we present a World Shorts
Programme, filled with some of the best entries and International
Award Winners submitted to us.
The Cork Film Festival runs from the October 12th
' 19th and screening details for the School's Programme
are attached. If you would like more information about the
Schools' Programme, information on booking or general comments
concerning the programme, please do not hesitate to call me.
Looking forward to hearing from you
